Gold Medal Winning 1950s style Village Post Office, Garage and Market Garden, Daily Mail Pavilion

Awards

The design has been inspired by a small family-owned market garden and reflects the golden years of the 1950s with its colourful rows of cut flowers and vegetables.  An old glasshouse, potting shed and cold frame are the working heart of the garden.   Containers full of flowers and boxes of vegetables wait to be loaded onto the Morris minor pickup ready to be taken to the village market.  In contrast to the regimented formality of the market garden, the family garden surrounding the village green, post office and garage, complete with 1954 MGTF open-topped sports car, is an explosion of colour and scent, showing many of the plant varieties grown in a market garden, such as dahlias and lilies in a border scheme.

This was Audrey’s first RHS show garden and was created in partnership with horticulturists Mary Payne (MBE) and Jon Wheatley for Mike Mann of the Cornwall and Lincolnshire based Winchester Growers Ltd, holders of the national dahlia collection.

Awards

It has been a wonderful opportunity to create a show garden with the fantastic response from the public making it all worthwhile.  To win gold at the first attempt is a dream come true. Special thanks to the hardworking team of people who helped build the garden.  It was a pleasure working with you all.
